The CERTAINTY project is an EU-funded initiative aimed at developing a virtual twin for personalized cancer treatment, particularly focusing on CAR T cell therapy. This project, led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, is part of the Digital Europe Programme and is being funded with almost EUR 10 million over the next 4.5 years. The virtual twin will be a digital representation of a patient’s health state, built using software models and data, and designed to mimic and predict the behavior of real patients. It aims to support doctors and patients by offering insights that may guide decisions during treatment, contributing to a more informed approach to cancer care. The project is also extending its technology to other adoptive cellular immunotherapies, such as CAR-NK cells, and will be integrated into the Digital Europe Programme.
The B2B-RARE initiative focuses on developing innovative treatments for rare neuromuscular diseases (NMEs). This interdisciplinary project aims to create personalized therapies for patients, including children and young adults, who currently lack effective treatments. The project utilizes skin cells from patients to develop diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, leveraging omics technologies and bioinformatics to identify disease mechanisms and transfer them into clinical applications.
The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) is an international scientific consortium founded in 2016 by Dr. Sarah Teichmann and Dr. Aviv Regev, aiming to map all human cell types in the body. Its goal is to create a 3-dimensional atlas of human cells, cataloging each cell by type, state, location, and lineage, which will transform our understanding of biology and disease. The project has been compared in ambition to the Human Genome Project, as it seeks to systematically describe the 37 trillion cells in the human body.
